How can I use the most correctly to talk to connected USB devices?

Specifically, how do I get data for USB devices, get information from devices, find the name of connected device, if they have storage, etc.

More specifically, I will run it on Mac OS X machine, so I know that I can not just use Windows header files.

If there is a good explanation on libusb and USB devices, then it would be very helpful.
