I have not found a good word for the data (or file) that needs to be fed by the template engine. I have often heard this data called "template", but it is clearly a misnomer (a template is processing instructions, not data has been processed). Wikipedia says that there are "documents" in some places, but this is not quite normal.
This is the first time I am sorry that I am not using XML, because XML is more or less rooted that it is being processed on some other "template arguments" or "template parameters" What about Technically, it would fit: A template is a set function, which is only dependent on its input.
